Work Culture 101
Succeed in any work environment

Workplaces thrive on collaboration.

What comes to mind when you think of work culture? Is it the team’s vibe, company policies, or leadership styles? Work culture (the shared values, beliefs, and practices that define an organization) is a crucial aspect of every workplace. It impacts how employees interact, make decisions, and thrive (or struggle) in their roles.

Many companies have established their work culture based on specific values, often presenting these as a corporate charter. However, like any culture, there are both normative and descriptive elements. The normative elements are the values that the company seeks to uphold, while the descriptive elements refer to the actual work environment and workflow that have naturally developed over time.

Honestly, work culture is shaped by so many factors that we could write a thesis on it, but what you need to know is this:

Every company has its own "unwritten rules" – from communication styles to decision-making processes. The faster you can adapt to them, the easier it is to integrate.

From Christmas party to firing event.

In a troubling turn of events at the Australian network “Channel Nine,” a Christmas party scandal led to the dismissal of executive David Richardson, underscoring a broader culture crisis within the network. Richardson, a seasoned media professional, was let go after allegations of inappropriate remarks at the company’s holiday gathering, highlighting a systemic issue of misconduct within the organization.

This incident is part of a larger pattern of high-profile departures at Channel Nine, including former director Darren Wick and Amanda Paterson, who were both fired over similar allegations. An external investigation revealed a troubling work culture, with over half of respondents reporting experiences of bullying, discrimination, and harassment, and 30% facing sexual harassment.

The network is under increasing scrutiny as it navigates this turbulent period of leadership changes and efforts to rebuild its reputation.
