Not An Adult Until 30
Welcome to a new era of adulthood, where many young people feel they’re caught in an endless game of “catch up.”
A recent survey by Life Happens shows that young professionals believe adulthood begins at age 30. According to the data, 56% consider paying their own bills a key sign of maturity, while 45% see financial independence as an essential milestone, as reported by Fortune.
Even as the oldest members of Gen Z reach 27, many are still financially reliant on their parents. The survey reveals that over half haven’t started a 401(k), and nearly 49% lack life insurance. Traditional milestones, such as buying a home, appear increasingly unattainable, with homeownership rates for those under 35 sinking to a historic low.
Navigating adulthood isn’t easy these days; 71% of people believe it’s tougher now than it was 30 years ago. Rising living costs and inflation are making it challenging to keep up, with 40% unsure if they’ll ever attain financial stability.
Many are aspiring to attain financial stability by age 46, yet the gap between this goal and reality is also widening. As young people reshape the concept of adulthood, the one thing that’s certain is that timelines are being pushed further out.
Facebook Revamp
Meta is shaking things up in an effort win back younger users.
The company introduced a new “Local” tab that highlights nearby events, groups, and activities, making it easier for users to discover local experiences. Despite a decline in younger users — from 71% in 2014 to just 33% today — young adults still engage with features like Facebook Marketplace. These updates aim to rebrand Facebook as a vibrant community hub, according to TechCrunch.
Alongside the “Local” tab, the updated Feed will feature local events and items for sale, as well as an “Explore” tab with personalized recommendations. The revamped “Video” tab will present a full-screen experience for various video formats to increase viewership.
Facebook is also enhancing its “Events” feature with a Weekly and Weekend Digest to keep users informed. Additionally, users can invite Instagram friends to events, and a new “Group AI” feature will help answer common questions in “Groups”.
Meta is also rolling out some fun AI features, including an “Imagine Yourself” image generator and a “Matchmaker” tool for dating. With these updates, the company aims to create a lively space for young people to connect and engage.
