Who is Hiring the Rookies?

Big Tech vs Bank

Normalization of Hiring Trends.

After the "great termination" shook the tech world, an air of uncertainty has lingered around tech careers. Many of us have likely heard the advice to "study programming and you'll get a job." Following the pandemic-era hiring binge, major companies like Amazon and Google made significant layoffs, prompting changes in the tech hiring landscape.

While the layoffs were a bit of a downer, the tech industry really picked up steam in the second half of 2024. It's looking like 2025 will be another great year for job growth in the sector, with an estimated 15-20% increase in opportunities.

As you might have guessed, a lot of these job openings are aimed at new graduates.

The following are our honest suggestions, no affiliate links or kickbacks apply.

Top Industries Hiring Recent Tech Graduates

➡️ Big Tech

Industry giants such as Amazon and Microsoft continue to be the companies that absorb the most human capital in the technology area, followed by other companies in the technology development area.

➡️ Banking

The financial sector is in the process of restructuring its entire technology infrastructure, and it is clear that companies such as Capital One and JP Morgan are increasingly absorbing the industry's young talent.

➡️ E-commerce

E-commerce is on the rise and so is recruitment, with companies such as Ebay leading the way.

Hot Off the Press!

Study engineering to work in a bank? You bet.

Isabelle Bousquette

Banks are becoming increasingly attractive to tech talent, offering competitive compensation, job stability, and opportunities to work on cutting-edge AI and technology projects. The sector's focus on innovation, coupled with the challenges faced by tech companies, has led to a shift in talent preferences.

Banks are investing in research departments, organizing hackathons, and publicizing their AI initiatives to attract top talent. They are also offering opportunities for research and development, particularly in areas like machine learning, data engineering, and generative AI.

While tech companies remain major employers, the financial services sector is gaining ground, with more tech graduates choosing to pursue careers in banking. This trend is expected to continue as banks continue to prioritize technology and innovation.
