The Recruiter’s Playbook
Insider Tips to Nail Your Interview

We all know the same old interview advice: "practice beforehand," "research the company," and "dress professionally.” But what's beyond that? After all, you can't really stand out if everyone is following the same playbook. We've gathered the ultimate interview hacks from expert recruiters to help you not only up your interview game but also your communication skills.

The following are our honest suggestions, no affiliate links or kickbacks apply.

Tailor Your Stories to the Role

People win awards for storytelling, and that's because how you tell a story is as important as the story itself. While we associate storytelling with fiction, the truth is that it is a powerful tool for all communication.

How to Do It:

Review the Job Description. Highlight key skills, responsibilities, and qualifications.

Identify Relevant Experiences. Choose 3–5 experiences from your background that align with the role.

Use the STAR Method:

  • Situation. Set the context. (“While managing X project…”)

  • Task. Explain the challenge or goal. (“We needed to improve efficiency by 20%.”)

  • Action with detail in the steps you took. (“I implemented automation tools and trained the team…”)

  • Result. Quantify your success. (“Productivity increased by 25%, and customer satisfaction improved.”)

Ask Thoughtful Questions

We tend to have the misconception that the part of the interview where we can ask questions is for the recruiter to see our interest, but in reality, it is our time to showcase our critical thinking skills.

Researching the company and having a list of insightful questions before the interview is a must, but practicing active listening will give you better results. During the interview, ask follow-up questions based on the conversation. And if any of your previously curated questions can fit into any point of the conversation, ask them right away; don't wait until the end of the interview to ask your questions.

Mirror the Interviewer’s Style

Building rapport is key to making a connection, and one of the most effective ways to do this is by subtly mirroring the interviewer’s style.

How to Do It:

Observe Their Communication Style. Are they formal or casual? Detail-oriented or big-picture focused?

Adjust Your Responses:

  • If they’re formal, keep your answers professional and concise.

  • If they’re relaxed, incorporate a touch of humor or personal anecdotes.

Mirror Body Language Subtly. Match their posture and energy level without overdoing it.

Repeat Key Phrases. If they emphasize “teamwork,” highlight your teamwork experiences using similar language.

Thought you nailed it, but then the recruiter's ghost you? 👻 Head on over to LinkedIn, and let's talk to find your areas of improvement and upgrade your interview game.
