Exec’s Tips for RoadMap Members

RoadMap members recently had the chance to engage live with Gayle Troberman, Chief Marketing Officer at iHeartMedia. As a guest speaker in the private RoadMap community, Troberman shared insights on career growth and networking strategies, offering practical advice for those looking to advance their careers.

She also addressed members' pressing questions on how to effectively build and leverage a professional network, emphasizing authenticity in relationship-building and staying open to new opportunities. Here are a few tips Gayle shared with RoadMap members:

  • Be Human First: When meeting new people, Gayle recommends starting the conversation with something personal and human, rather than immediately focusing on business or career-related topics. Simple questions like “How’s your day going?” can open doors to deeper connections and opportunities.

  • Be Open to Opportunities: Gayle says that she didn’t always have a master plan but remained open to opportunities that came her way. She encourages others to embrace unexpected chances and take the leap, as opportunities may not always align with initial expectations.

  • Embrace Change and Adaptability: As technology has evolved rapidly, Gayle stresses the importance of continuously learning new things. She advises that being adaptable and open to learning will help young professionals navigate a fast-changing work environment.

By focusing on human connection, staying open to opportunities, and continuously adapting, young professionals can grow and seize unexpected paths to success.

Noplace’s Shift to Simplicity

Tiffany Zhong, founder of new social network Noplace, is capturing attention by reimagining early social media platforms like Facebook and Myspace. Noplace focuses on simplicity—no photos, no videos, just text updates that encourage users to express their authentic selves. Launched this summer, it quickly topped app stores, with its 500,000-user waitlist driven by viral TikTok videos, according to reporting by Fast Company.

The platform is resonating with recent grads who seek self-expression without the pressure of curated content. Customizable profiles, moods, and activities add to Noplace’s appeal, providing users a more unique space to connect.

Noplace’s focus on authenticity marks a shift away from highly curated, image-driven platforms. For young professionals, this shift is a reminder that when communicating about yourself, it's more important to be genuine than perfect.

Travel Program Fuels Growth

Verkada, a San Mateo-based security company, has implemented a business travel program that has been particularly appealing to its younger employees. Launched in 2022, this initiative allows entry-level marketing staff to travel to global offices, providing opportunities for professional growth through experiential learning. More than half of the 35 participants in the program have been Gen Z employees, eager for travel and hands-on experience, according to reporting from Inc.

The program started after a younger team member expressed interest in learning from other offices. To ensure that the travel serves a business purpose, employees must outline the value of their trip and how it will impact their work. This structure not only allows for personal and professional growth but also ensures that insights gained during these trips are applied to future work.

Participants have returned with fresh ideas, improving cross-office collaboration and boosting the effectiveness of their campaigns. Verkada's travel program highlights how experiential learning can help young talent and drive meaningful business results.
