Hey, Roadies!

Good morning and happy Monday. If you’re powering through finals, don’t forget to hydrate. If you’re all done with the school year…hydrate anyway. It’s never a bad idea.

Good Company: Healthcare, Without the Blood and Guts

Expand your roster of possible companies

If your only experiences with healthcare are your yearly checkups and “Grey’s Anatomy,” you may not be aware that you can have a great career in the field without ever touching a scalpel.

There are many careers on the business side of hospitals and medical practices. You should explore this if you:

  • Are a caring person who wants to help people, or

  • Have great attention to detail

Exceptional attention to detail is especially important here because you don’t want to be the person responsible for billing a patient for a major surgery when they only had a mole removed.

If you think you’d thrive in a role like this, do this now

  • Take this career aptitude test

  • Look around online for medical administrative positions and fill out an application or two. If it doesn’t work out, use the process to grow your network.

+One thing to note: Some of these positions require an advanced degree. Sometimes that’s more like a “nice to have,” and a bachelor’s degree is fine. It’s worth applying anyway!

Triv, Laugh, Love

A trivia question, to keep you sharp

Yesterday, Howard Schultz, the former CEO of a well-known company, posted on LinkedIn about how the company needs to turn itself around following a disappointing earnings report. What is the company Schultz previously led?

A) Facebook

B) Amazon

C) Walmart

D) Starbucks

As always, no Googling!

Monday Etiquette Tip: Picking Up the Check

We’re your workplace Emily Post

Have an internship this summer? First, congrats!

Second, you’ve probably heard this before, but you should do whatever you can to get to know everyone at the company you’re interning for – not just your manager and those in your department.

If your manager takes you out for coffee or lunch, they’ll likely insist on paying, and you can let them – that’s standard. They’re your boss! But if you go out with someone else, you should at least offer to cover it. They might insist on paying, and you can back down after an initial offer, but offering to pay shows that you appreciate them taking time out of their day to answer your questions and/or get to know you. It’s the classy move.

Trivia Answer

The correct answer is D) – Schultz was the CEO of Starbucks from 2008 to 2017, and then again from 2022 to 2023.
