We know that quality over quantity is everything, but sometimes a "shotgun approach" –  applying to many jobs in a short period of time – can be a useful strategy to increase your chances of landing the perfect job.

While it's common to hear that the job search takes time and patience, the truth is that it can take 3 to 6 months to land a job, and when you need it, those months can feel like an eternity. In the meantime, sending out multiple resumes can open doors you never thought possible and make it happen faster.

The More, The Merrier

This approach may seem like a numbers game, and it is, but it's also about staying organized, adjusting your approach as needed, and not getting discouraged. Here is what you need to do to keep track of your applications:

➡️ Create a Master Resume

Start with a comprehensive resume that includes all your experience, skills, and achievements. Use this as your base to tailor your resume for each job you apply to, focusing on what’s most relevant.

Keep tabs on your applications with a simple spreadsheet. Include columns for job titles, company names, application dates, and follow-up dates. Stay on top of which stage each application is in, it helps avoid any missed opportunities and ensures you're following up timely. You can even color-code the statuses to make it visually easy to see where things stand.

Consistency is key. Set daily or weekly goals for how many applications you aim to submit, but make sure to adjust for quality as well. Too many low-effort applications will just add to burnout without results.

Office jobs, particularly in tech and media, remain hard-hit despite fewer layoffs in 2024. While sectors like healthcare and manufacturing continue hiring, there are fewer openings overall—one job per unemployed worker compared to two in 2022. Contributing factors include reduced hiring in tech, return-to-office mandates, slower wage growth, and the rising influence of AI in the workforce.
