As YouTube turns 20, critical details about the platform remain hidden. While Google has selectively shared stats (like one billion hours watched daily on TV) it withholds key data on total usage, content volume, and user behavior.

Researchers, led by Ethan Zuckerman, built a “scraper” tool to randomly generate YouTube URLs, uncovering insights Google won’t provide. Their findings challenge assumptions: YouTube hosts over 14.8 billion videos, but most aren’t from professional creators. The median video has just 41 views, is 64 seconds long, and 89% have no likes. More than half feature shaky camera work and 4% have never been watched.

Experts argue YouTube isn’t just entertainment, it’s critical infrastructure for communication, politics, and culture. Yet, without transparency, its influence remains difficult to assess. With increasing regulatory scrutiny on big tech, will YouTube finally be forced to reveal the full picture?
