Friday Networking Tip: Believe in Yourself
In this section, RoadMap provides insights about growing your career inner circle
Yes, we know it sounds like a cheesy Disney movie. But one obstacle that may be keeping you from networking is feeling like you don’t have much to offer, since you’re at the beginning of your career.
That may be true to some degree – you probably don’t have many connections or high-level insights, but you’ll likely find you can offer quite a bit.
For example, when you seek advice from people with established careers, you’re actually giving them something valuable. People enjoy mentoring. It gives them a feeling of achievement, and a sense that they’re helping others – both of which are great mood boosts.
The key to this is making sure you express gratitude when networking goes well. When someone does you a favor, make it worth their time with recognition and thanks. That’s what makes it equitable for both parties.
Here’s what to do now:
Shift your mindset toward networking to a belief that, while you are asking other people for favors, you’re also helping them.
That doesn’t mean you can waste people’s time, but give yourself permission to feel like you’re adding value. It’s an equal exchange – they lend you a hand, you express gratitude.
Starting Points: Let’s Get Real
In this section, we describe entry-level roles in various fields, so you know what’s out there
If you think you might want to go into corporate real estate, but aren’t entirely sure, you’re in luck. There are several entry-level positions that don’t require a prior experience (usually). That way, you can test it out and see if you want to commit to the field.
Here are a few entry-level roles you could explore:
Real Estate Marketing Assistant: This would mean helping with marketing efforts for a brokerages or agencies, like social media and online advertising. You’d likely also help with content creation, open house events, and showings.
Transaction Coordinator: Here you’d be helping with the logistics of business transactions. If you’re highly organized and detail-oriented, this could be the role for you.
